The Stage Fort Park Playground Improvement Project-- Gloucester Rotary's 100th Anniversary Gift to Our Community-- has moved forward another step!

In March, old equipment was removed and the new playground equipment was installed! More work is to be completed before the project is finalized, but this was a major step.

Important note: The equipment is not yet open for children to use. Please respect the caution tape surrounding the new equipment.

Thanks to generous donations from the Gloucester and Manchester & Essex Rotary Clubs, a District 7930 Managed Grant, and private non-Rotary donations, a $45,000 generator was purchased for Kivu Hills Medical Center in 2023. The generator finally arrived in February after contending with massive rainstorms, which led to treacherous potholes and mudslides. It was an extreme challenge for the truck carrying this generator. Thankfully, the road will be paved soon.

There is currently no medical clinic locally for the 30,000 rural residents of Boneza, and the Kivu Hills Medical Center will also provide services to millions of people in the surrounding regions when it opens its doors later in 2024.

In addition, the Gloucester and Rockport Rotary Clubs donated funds—again with support from a District 7930 Managed Grant—to purchase a generator for the Kivu Hills Academy. This generator was officially dedicated to the school in May 2022. The Academy is the first and only high school with three hundred students enrolled annually in Boneza, educating thousands in the greater geographic area with their hands-on curriculum.

Power in rural Boneza goes out several times each week. These generators provide consistent power and are critical for the medical center and academy.

We look forward to dedicating the newest medical center on our next visit.

The mission of Arise Rwanda is “To positively transform the community of Boneza out of extreme poverty by focusing on education, clean water, healthcare and economic development.”  For more information, please visit Ariserwanda.org.

The Gloucester Rotary Club invites the public to attend their FUNdraising event – “A Night at the Races” on Friday, April 5, 2024, at Cruiseport Gloucester, located at 6 Rowe’s Wharf in Gloucester. Doors open at 6:30 pm. All proceeds from this event will support local and international programs of the Gloucester Rotary.  Buy tickets and sponsor the event.

A Night at the Races promises to be a fun-filled evening for adults with all the suspense and excitement of being at the racetrack. High quality, video-taped horse races are narrated from start to finish by lively announcers. During the evening there will be complimentary hors d’oeuvre, a cash bar, and variety of raffles. At various points during the evening, betters will be able to use their winnings to bid on merchandise and services that have been donated for the event. For the most fun, reserve a table – bring a group. Tickets are $20 per person and may be purchased in advance online or from any Gloucester Rotarian or at the door.
The Gloucester Rotary has published a 12-month Cape Ann photo calendar for 2024, featuring the photography of several local photographers. In addition to the beautiful photography, each calendar includes a raffle ticket for a $50 weekly raffle drawing throughout the year.  The calendars are $25 each and proceeds from sales will be used for the Gloucester Rotary’s many community and international activities.

The calendars are available for purchase at the Weathervane Gift Shop, located at 153 Main Street in Gloucester (phone 978-281-1227), at BankGloucester, located at 160 Main Street in Gloucester (978-283-8200), and from any Gloucester Rotary member.
